How to Enable your Windows Pocket PC to Display on-screen Caps-Lock and Alternate Symbol Indicators
If you have a mobile device with a QUERTY keyboard, there's no light
to indicate if the you're about to type the main or alternate symbol
assigned to a key or if Caps-Lock
is enabled when typing letters. Fortunately it just requires a simple
registry edit to enable on-screen indicators for these.
(Yes, just like regular Desktop Windows, Windows Mobile also has a registry to hold configuration information .)
Unfortunately Windows Mobile doesn't
come with a registry editing program like Regedit in regular
Windows. Fortunately there's a free Windows Mobile registry editor you
can download. Unfortunately - no, there's no unfortunately, let's get
on with it!
The process is in 3 stages:-
| 1 - |
Download the Registry Editor
There's a suitable free registry editor called Mobile Registry Editor
that you can download from
here.
Download the ZIP file to a PC on which you've setup an
ActiveSync relationship with your mobile device.
Save the file to somewhere you'll find it easily, the Desktop is a good place.
|
| 2 - |
Edit the Registry
Extract the 2 files form the downloaded ZIP file.
Connect your Mobile Device to the PC in the normal way and wait
until ActiveSync starts and the connection is confirmed.
Run the file MobileRegistryEditor.exe on your PC which
will edit the mobile device's registry through the ActiveSync
connection. Navigate to the registry location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keyb
Right-click on a blank part of the right-hand window and choose:-
New - DWORD Value
|
|
|
 |
|
|
Enter the Value Name and Value Data as shown below:-
|
|
 |
|
3 -
|
Save the Settings and Perform a Soft Reset
Quit the registry editor on the PC.
Wait 30 seconds.
Remove the mobile device from it's ActiveSync cradle or USB lead and power it.
Wait 30 seconds.
Perform a soft reset.
(This is usually done by using the stylus to press a tiny button on
the side on the device.)
|
|
|
Now, when you have a program open that requires input, such as Word
Mobile you'll see an indicator at the bottom of the screen.
A "C" means Cap-lock:-
|
|
 |
|
and a solid circle means Alternate Symbol:-
