How to Change when the Junk E-mail folder turns Bold

When a new emails arrive in an Outlook folder, the folder name changes to a Bold font to alert you that the folder now contains unread items and a number, in brackets, is appended to the folder name to indicate the number of unread emails.
Once all the new items have been opened, the folder name returns to a Normal font.

It's good practice to create new top-level folders and sub-folders to file emails from different senders or with related subjects so that your Inbox then only contains a handful of new and "pending" emails.
You can manually move emails to these other folders or create Outlook Rules to do this for you automatically. If emails in your Inbox are "pushed" to your phone then you'll probably need to have non-urgent emails automatically moved to other folders so your phone won't keep alerting you to them.
Without the "Bold means unread" feature you wouldn't  be alerted to new emails that have been automatically filed into other folders.

Only the Junk E-mail folder in Outlook folders doesn't, by default,  follow the
"Bold means unread" convention.

It might appear that the Sent Items folder also doesn't follow this convention but it does. Emails that you send are marked as "read" when they're copied to this folder, which is sensible as you don't normally need to look at them.

The Junk E-mail folder turns bold if it contains any emails, read or unread so, unless you're constantly checking and deleting items from Junk E-mail you aren't alerted to new emails there. The reason for looking in the Junk E-mail folder at all is to make sure that no genuine emails have been classified as spam by mistake. Because the Junk E-mail folder stays Bold even when all the items it contains have been read, it can make you waste time looking at the Junk E-mail folder more often than is necessary.

I prefer the Junk E-mail folder to behave just like all other folders and only turn Bold when it contains unread emails and so here's how to change its behaviour:-

How to change the Junk E-mail folder so it only goes Bold for unread emails

In Outlook, right-click on the Junk E-mail folder and select Properties and go to the General tab.

Select Show number of unread items

Select: Show number of unread items

Then click OK
